Teaching Portfolios

When you finish teaching a particular course or set of courses, I ask that each of you upload a "Teaching Portfolio" (.pdf) that documents your class and provides other relevant documents on the artCore wiki. This is now required of ALL TAs teaching in artCORE. (The Teaching Portfolio is something we review in detail in the "Studio Art Pedagogy" seminar - ARA 522 - that I teach each Fall).
The easiest way to create a portable document of all of your work is to assemble all of your materials as a Microsoft Word .doc, then export as a .pdf. If you have been keeping up with your projects and documentation of student work, this doesn't take too terribly long. There are some excellent examples already on the wiki in the "Complete Portfolios” section below. Look in particular at Kelly O'Briant's, Matthew Mosher’s, Elise Deringer, or Parker Barfield's. The reason for asking for a .pdf rather than simply pointing me to a website is that I want to have a secure archive of your classes and not risk losing the significant work you have done (as sometimes happens when posted on a "temporary" personal website). Also, the .pdf is easy to print and may come in useful in other contexts such as the all important job interview.
As to the content of your Portfolio, see the list below along with the general overview from Vanderbilt University under Teaching Portfolio Resources (link below).
- Title Page with your name and contact info (image optional)
- Table of Contents (tie this to a system for navigating your materials…tabs for example).
- CV
- Cover Letter (sample letter of applying to job opportunity)
- Teaching Philosophy (one page)
- Artist Statement (one page)
- Sample syllabi (if you have NOT taught, include an “aspirational syllabus”…how you would organize your dream course? Should reflect your Teaching Philosophy).
- Sample project assignment sheets (minimum of three)
- Examples of student work
- Other support materials you have created such as quizzes or midterms
- Student Evaluations (Optional).
- Letters of Recommendation (Optional. These should include mention of your teaching experience)
I will accept your ePortfolios through the Final Exam period.
Thanks!
Dan
